I am a Software Engineer with 5 years’ experience of detailed Software Development, Software System Design and low level Software Testing. My current work has encompassed development of Windows applications in C++ with and SQL Server, and web-based applications with ASP and Visual Basic. I possess a good knowledge of the software life cycle and have developed software under environments with both formal and informal development processes. I run a website coded in PHP, HTML and JavaScript with a MySQL back-end run on a Linux host

Final Year Project:A demonstration of sorting algorithm efficiency.

This Windows based application was specifically designed to be a teaching aid for university lecturers and it allowed the user to animate sorting algorithms and compare the sort speed by running them simultaneously. The project was awarded a mark of 79%. The project was coded using object oriented methodologies and used multi-threaded and MDI techniques.

Sept 2003 – Present Pilgims Systems PLC Software Engineer
I am currently a software engineer at Pilgrim Systems PLC in Edinburgh. Pilgrim systems supplies software and IT services to legal practices across the UK. My current responsibilities include:
  • Software development in Visual C++, C#, and ASP.
  • Writing of SQL scripts for Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Code maintenance and resolution of errors.

March 2000–Sept 2003 EDS Defence UK Ltd Software Engineer
I worked on two projects during my employment at EDS. The first was an MoD sponsored real-time data processing system for detecting biological and chemical warfare. The software on which I worked interpreted and displayed data from an array of biological, chemical and meteorological sensors. My responsibilities included:
  • Full time software design and development using Visual C++, MFC and UML.
  • Developing System Software and Sensor Simulation Software.
  • Maintenance of code and resolution of errors.
  • Integration testing of software with hardware at sub contractor sites.
  • System and Acceptance testing of software under client scrutiny.
  • Evaluating the suitability if Rational test tools for the project.
  • Constructing and maintaining a reference system to accurately mimic the target hardware.

  • Support all aspects of the payroll system (an INGRES database implemented on a Unix platform) by maintaining databases, providing support and advice to payroll staff, and writing SQL scripts to generate requested reports.

June 1997 – Sept 1998 Head Software International Software Developer
Prior to my final year at University I worked at Head Software International (HSI) for fifteen months. HSI are a small software house specialising in bespoke database applications and electronic publishing. My responsibilities were:
  • Develop database conversion programs
  • Develop custom database applications in Delphi
  • Develop web databases using C++ and CGI
  • Prepare and present customer training
  • Write user manuals
  • Assist with customer support.
June 1995 – Sept 1995 Origin UK Ltd Programming Assistant
I worked at Origin UK Ltd (a software house) for three months before commencing my university degree. My responsibilities were:

Interests and responsibilities:

Photography Website

I have an interest in digital photography and dedicate my website, JamesWiseman.com to the photos that I have taken. The site is self-sustaining though ‘pay-as-you-click’ advertising, and I have recently sold royalty-free collections for travel brochure and website usage.

Running

I have completed the London Marathon twice, in 1998 and 2001. On both occasions I have represented my company and raised £750 for charity. I continue to run in my spare time.

Juggling

I was chairman of the university juggling club, for two years. I was responsible for organising activities, social events and performances. I was also involved with tuition and instruction. I am able to juggle a total of five balls and am proficient with fire clubs. In my final year of university I was photographed fire breathing for the front cover of the university magazine.
