And I was out! Dammit!

“We have noticed from our logs that you have been downloading lots of viruses”

My wife took the call, and politely declined, which is more than they deserved. I’ve got a nice counter-scam dreamed up as well (see This Post for my thoughts on this).

So, to all the criminals responsible for perpetrating the scam that are this. Please ring back, I REALLY want technical support, as my event viewer has lots of errors, and my prefetch folder is full of viruses!

Help!

  1. It was good to read about this scam as I received a call yesterday 8 Sept 2010 about 12:30pm. After 20 minutes the call ended after I said I couldn’t afford 2 or 3 years tech support for $208 or $290. The cost came down to $114 for a years support and then $62 for 6mths. I said I still couldn’t afford it and couldn’t they just fix it as a one off. I am curently on my long service leave at half pay but told them that I wasn’t working and couldn’t afford those costs. They didn’t push it any longer and hung up pretty quickly. During the course of events I did ask where they were located and was told Queensland. I didn’t believe them as the two ladies I spoke to were hard to understand because of the indian accent, that’s why the call took so long and you could hear in the back ground the call centre with heaps of others talking on the phone, all indian voices. Having a bit of time on my hands, I went through the whole ‘eventvwr, prefetch and then to the log in screen http://www.logmein123.com‘ they must have been pissed off at the end. They said the services were free and in the end they were…..after you paid the whatever registration. They make out that they receive the messages from microsoft when there is an error but I have always hit don’t send so couldn’t figure out how that would be. I was in the middle of doing an email to someone when I received the call but she waited on the line while I finished it so I could then run ‘eventvwr’ etc. There was no way I was going to let them access my PC remotely. I was hoping they would just tell me what I needed to delete as they said their services were free. There was no way I was handing over credit card details. They said they were Techisonline.
